Current accessible maternity services offer education around preparing for labour and birth, lightly touching on the early days with your baby….and that’s where I differ. Although it’s so important to be prepared and understand the body in this time, I feel the most important preparation and one that’s overlooked, is preparing to be a parent.
We all need help planning for the early postnatal period and the transition to parenting
and as a specialist midwife I am able to focus on the areas that aren’t a priority to mainstream services.
I’m often told by new parents that they felt so unprepared for the immediate time after birth and the first few weeks with baby. Being left alone with baby at home can be a totally overwhelming time and the anxieties that come with that being huge. Our expectations are usually so very far away from the reality, and so the first thing I can do is help you prepare for the early days and help you to understand your baby and the transition to life, creating a calm, stress free home environment.
Postnatal planning is key and a perfect place for your journey with me to start, Being one of the most important things you can do for you as parents, your baby and for your support network. Together we'll look at those first few weeks in depth, focusing on your recovery and where you need help as well as give you a in depth understanding of your babies needs as you navigate the early days of parenting. And if you wish, we can help get breastfeeding off to the very best start.
Our Parent preparation sessions are very individual and really do depend on you and your individual circumstances. Whether you’re a fostering family, you’re welcoming a baby through adoption or starting a family through surrogacy, the crucial 4th trimester will be addressed in depth, providing you with the confidence to embrace parenthood and the knowledge to understand your baby’s transition to life. These sessions can be for you alone, include your partner and even grand parents.
